A Big Bunch of Birds Told Me

When we moved in, the former owners left us a big, new bag of black sunflower seeds and three bird feeders, because the birds were expecting (and counting on) being fed.  Eric has taken on the majority of the wild bird care and developed a bit of an interest in watching and identifying those at our feeders.

Just in the last six or so weeks the list Eric keeps on the chalkboard on the side of our mudroom fridge has about doubled

We also hear what we think is a Northern Pygmy-Owl.  An Audubon Handbook:Western Birds describes their call as a, "soft, hollow abbreviated hoo, repeated every few seconds, also gives a short, rapid trill."  I kind of wish it was the Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl (listed on the facing page), because their call is described as a, "long series of took or poop notes, usually two notes per second or faster."  POOP NOTES!  Fast ones.  Also, "Ferruginous" is way more fun to say than "Northern."

UPDATE: The "we" regarding the Northern Pygmy-Owl is me and our moms, not necessarily Eric.

  1. This must be lots of fun. I'm happy he is keeping a bird list.

    1. Yeah, it's pretty neato. A pair White-breasted Nuthatches are nesting in a birdhouse hung under our eves and Violet Green Swallows are in what we think is part of a muffler or something that is hung up there, too. So rustic.

    2. I am told, supposedly for the severalth time, that it is a gas tank, not a muffler. I do believe that gas tanks fall into the "or something" category and am just happy to have recognized it as a motorized vehicle part or accessory.

  2. Looks like he didn't think he'd see as many birds as he has. I love how the writing is big and then he had to go smaller as he saw more. Bird watching is actually very relaxing and kind of fun. Espeically when they're up close and personal, like right outside your window :)

    1. Exactly! I like that, too. Most of them get right up on the feeders when we're sitting on the deck right by the feeders, too.

  4. Ha! Right? I thought E had put that there for funsies, because silly/naughty bird names ARE fun, but he told me that he didn't and he suspects one of the dudes who was here for Mid-May Montana Mountain Mayhem. Good times.
